Members are civilian volunteers and receive no compensation for their participation. Although the APDST is affiliated with APD, members are not sworn law enforcement officers.

This is a very unique volunteer position. Membership is open to any resident of the APD service area who is moderately fit and who has the ability to make a significant commitment.

The application process includes submitting an application to the APD. Applications are subject to a criminal background and driving record check. Each applicant then will be interviewed. If selected, the team member will be subject to a short probation period, training and classes leading to search and rescue certification.
